HUMC Leadership Team January 6 Update:

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” Martin Luther King Jr.

As many of you know, 2022 begins our new Simplified Accountable Structure (SAS) at HUMC, a break from the traditional committee model contained within the United Methodist Discipline. If you don’t know what SAS is, it is a streamlined leadership structure which will allow us to focus more on our missions, make decisions more efficiently and set strategic goals for our church.

This does not change our mission of making disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world or our vision of Feeding People, Changing Lives. SAS is a model that allows folks to serve in a variety of ways without the burden of attending many meetings.

The new Leadership Team met most of the day on Saturday, January 8th to begin the process of setting up this structure and determining what we feel are defining goals in the life of HUMC. We developed a covenant for our team so that each of us knows what is expected of us and it defines how we agreed to work with each other.

We have set four goals to start 2022 which include:

  • Determine if we move forward with the proposal from the Wesley Community Development Corps by 1/31/2022. (Wesley CDC is a United Methodist based development company that will help us assess all our resources at Heritage and how we can best utilize them to create sustainable ministries and opportunities for community engagement).

  • Determine how we will follow up with individuals who visit worship services at HUMC by 6/30/2022.

  • Establish a plan of action to increase our small group ministry by 12/31/2022.

  • Review the overall music ministry at HUMC by 5/1/2022. With the retirement of Sandy Matthes, we need to discern what the overall music program will look like in the future.

Each of the above will require many tasks to be successful and, with the help of the congregation, the Leadership Team is committed to meeting monthly to work together to accomplish these goals.  In addition to this work, the Leadership Team also combines the typical work of the Trustees, Finance, SPPRC, and Council.  A summary of the minutes of these meetings will be posted for review after each meeting.

The Leadership Team is EXCITED! We believe this will breathe new life into our church family. We are changing the way we think! If something doesn’t go as planned, we will not focus on what’s wrong, we will regroup and use what we have and move forward. We won’t just try to fix things; we will step back and decide what do we really want to accomplish. We plan to focus on what can be possible not on why did this happen.

This will be a process, not an overnight change; however, you have our commitment that we have made these goals our priority, and with God at the center, we will work diligently to accomplish all of the goals. We covet your prayers for our church and this team.
If you have questions, please contact Pastors Amy Beth or Taeshin, or speak with anyone on the Leadership Team. The Leadership Team members are Steve Safritt, Kevin McCoy, LeRon Howard, George McConnell (chair), Linda McConnell, Susan Jones, Jeff Brown, Linda Ingram and Bob Ingram.
