HUMC Leadership Team Update from March 8 Meeting:

Heritage United Methodist Church

2022-03-08 Leadership Team meeting Summary

Present (online meeting): Jeff Brown, Amy Beth Coleman, LeRon Howard, Bob and Linda Ingram, Taeshin Kim, George and Linda McConnell, Kevin McCoy, Steve Safritt

Devotion and opening prayer: Linda McConnell opened the meeting at 18:35 with a devotion on service by church members and living our faith.

Taeshin opened the meeting with prayer.

Celebrating new people and ministries: 

  • Youth Paint Night on March 5th was well attended by HUMC members and friends.

  • Staff is engaging with guests in a variety of ways.

Progress toward goals: Annual Goals mentioned. 

  • Wesley Community Development Corporation and Music Ministry goals discussed at this meeting

Pressing issues for discussion at this meeting: 

  • Ongoing work with Wesley Community Development Corporation

    • Wesley CDC on-site visit on February 23rd which included an extensive walk through the facilities and an audio-visual audit with a company. We are awaiting their report. Several Leadership Team members attended this. 

    • Positive follow-up feedback with team members about the possibilities

    • Jane is working with CDC on providing relevant information. 

    • Will soon be planning a meeting with congregation for input

    • We are the first client for Wesley CDC outside of North Carolina, and Wesley CDC reports that they are meeting with the Virginia Annual Conference Cabinet about setting up an entity similar to Wesley in Virginia. The Bishop and Cabinet will be using Heritage UMC as their “marquee church” and an example for their endeavors with other VAUMC churches. 

  • Music Ministry at HUMC and Sandy’s retirement

    • Consulting with a few people outside of HUMC (at no cost) with vast experience in music ministry.

    • Amy Beth, Jeff, Bob, and Susan will work on a sub-group for Music Minister job description and interviews.

    • Will seek Don’s assistance in providing interim services for the 11:00 service.

    • Planned details for recognizing Sandy in her retirement

      • Reception, Sunday, April 10th, at 10:00 am.

      • Donations to the HUMC Organ Fund in Sandy’s honor  

  • Guiding principles

    • Approved some of the guiding principles discussed at last meeting. 

    • Made a few additions and corrections to principles.

    • Team Covenant is separate. Both documents are updated as needed.

Discussion of reports: 

  • Preschool

    •  Still looking for a director. The preschool is running smoothly at present. There are 41 students registered for 2022-23, and the goal is to reach 80. 

    • Discussion about mask policy changes, and feedback has been received favorably.

  • Staff

    • Clarification provided for what the team is seeking on monthly report to team

    • Second nursery attendant is needed

  • Finance

    • Electric bills have increased

    • Discussion about cash flow and UM Foundation accounts

    • Debt (mortgage – 146,000) is very low compared to the valuation of facilities.

  • Property Maintenance

    • Will be forming a new team (led by Steve Safritt) to take care of property maintenance and former Trustee responsibilities. Will seek volunteers by personal contact and placing a note in midweek mail. 

    • Discussed purchase of a new mower and approved. 

  • Mission

    • Discussed May Mission Week (Interfaith Rebuilds). Amy Beth will discuss at Mission Meeting on 3/15/22.

  • Children/Youth Ministries Team

    • No Discussion


  • Action items were reviewed and designated by next meeting

Additional items:

  • Discussion about mask policy at HUMC and possible changes. Consensus was reached that signage will be updated to say masks recommended per the current CDC recommendations for our area. 

  • Amy Beth led a discussion about her congregational email about the postponement of 2022 General Conference to 2024.
